2017 Jocelyne Dougan

2017 is a year of transition for the the University of Minnesota College of Design program for study in Rome. This new, ambitious  coursse will be a rewarding challenge for all those participating. Beginning the last week of May, twenty one College of Design students will study for six to eight weeks in the Eternal City. This group will include design majors in architecture, landscape architecture, graphics, interior and fashion design. Their programs will vary but in addition to their drawing and history classes, the emphasis will be on interacting with local Italian designers, artists and craftsmen who work in their respective fields. How bellissimo is that?! (syllabus draft: RomeDesignStudioSyllabusglDRAFT)

To represent the SPQR Fellowship, the College scholarship review committee selected sophomore Jocelyne Dougan, stating, “The review committee agreed that your drawings especially demonstrated a potential to explore the city through drawing in interesting ways.

We are very enthusiastic about this talented young student who has not yet been to Europe. When asked to introduce herself to the other SPQR Fellows, Jocelyne submitted the following:

My family lives in Menomonie, WI and I am one of four children. My father is an Engineer and throughout my childhood, he patiently included my siblings and me in many of his projects. To name a few, we toured work sites, read blueprints, sketched, and helped him renovate his own home. This experience nourished my passion for art and mathematics, which has lead me to pursue a future in architecture. My mother is the Instructional Math Coach for the school district in my hometown, and my stepfather is a Manager of Quality Control for Delta Airlines in Minneapolis. Being a part of the Delta family has provided us with the opportunity to create memories through travel, but I have never been to Europe.

I cannot express how extremely grateful I am for the SPQR Fellowship that has made the financial burden of this study abroad possible. I am determined to make the most of this unique opportunity. Having just completed my sophomore year studying architecture at the University of Minnesota, spending time in Rome, famously known for its architecture, is a dream come true. I will apply what I learn from my coursework and internship to my pursuit of a Bachelors of Design in Architecture as well as a minor in Interior Environments. Upon completion of my undergraduate work, I plan to continue my education by pursuing a Masters of Architecture.
